• Perkins Engines has won a major export order to supply the same 67kW (90hp) T4.38 turbocharged four-cylinder engine used in the Dodge 50Series, to Renault Vehicules Industriels in France for its recently-launched 3.5-7.5 tonne GVW Midliner S truck range.
The T4.38 has only been available in the 50-Series three months (CM March 15), as a replacement for the old naturally-aspirated six-cylinder Perkins unit.
Perkins expects to ship around 3,000 T4.38 engines to France annually — business worth up to £5 million.
However, Renault Truck Industries-RV1's UK subsidiary — says that the Midliner S range will not be bought into Britain. Any replacement of the 50-Series will be "UK originated", and it is not contemplating any material changes to the 50-Series in the immediate future.
