• In move which would have been unheard of even 10 years ago, Road Haulage Association director-general Freddie Plaskett has become a part-time non-executive director of British Rail's London Midland Region.
Both the RHA and BR hailed the appointment as a "welcome step towards co-operation" between road and rail transport and said this will become increasingly important as the Channel Tunnel is built.
Plaskett's appointment comes with the unanimous blessing of the RHA's senior executives and its present and immediate past chairmen, Glyn Samuel and Bert Neely.
Freightliner, BR's container subsidiary and Britain's last nationalised road haulier, is a full RUA member and its managing director, Bryan Driver, has a seat on the national council.
Driver's predecessor at Freightliner, Cyril Bleas dale, was earlier this year made general manager of the London Midland Region after an earlier spell as director of BR's Inter-City Sector.
BR's Railfreight business is a major associate member of the R HA.
In addition to his new BR role, Plaskett is also a director of Foden Trucks.
