Having a Capacity of 600 Gallons, Ice Cream May be Kept at Zero Temperature for 24 Hours by the Use
of CO2
D VILT to the design of the Farm Ice L./Creamery, Ltd., Chase Estate, Acton Lane, London, N.W.10, four interesting insulated vans have recently been put into service by this concern. The bodies have been constructed by the Eastern Carriage and Motor Works, Woodford Avenue, Southend Road, Ilford, and the vehicles, which have as their bases the Fordson 2-ton chassis, have been supplied through Hamilton Motors (London), Ltd., 466-490, Edgware Road, London, W.2.
The bodies have a capacity of 600 gallons of ice cream in packets, and they are insulated by means of a 4-in. lining of kapok between the inner and outer shells. To prevent this material from sinking in the body sides, ledges are arranged at distances of 12 ins., Irons the top to the bottom.
The domed roof is also lined with kapok, and the inner lining of the sides and roof is of zinc.
Two compartments are provided with specially insulated doors on the near side of the vehicle. Refrigerator-type locks are fitted and an additional safety catch is provided.
• An interesting feature of the bodies is that in each compartment vaned bunkers on the inside of the roof hold 25-lb. blocks of CO„. The refrigeration thus afforded enables the ice cream to be kept at zero temperature for a period of 24 hours. The floor of each compartment is of cork 4 ins, thick, covered with zinc, and gutters carry any water away. At the rear of the body two lockers are arranged for the carriage of empty cans.
Attractively finished in white with green lettering, the vehicles weigh 2 tons 17 cwt. unladen, and are equipped with the Hamilton Pullman all-metal cab.
They are to be used for delivery work to a radius of 30 miles from the ice-cream factory, also for long-distance
delivery work to wholesalers. The machines are operated under contract by Mr. I/ Hardy. Broad Lane, Tottenham, London, N.15.
