A FLEET OF SIX-WHEELERS FOR SCOTLAND.

Brief Details of One of Four Karrier Vehicles Recently Delivered to a User in Perth.

WE reproduce on this page an rtration of one of the first of four six-wheeled saloon buses which Karrier Motors, Ltd., Karrier Works, Huddersfield, is delivering to Messrs. David Hepburn, of Perth, the body of the vehicle being's 40-seater built by Messrs. Peter Crerar, of Crieff. The basis of the vehicle is the maker's WL6-type chassis, which incorporates in its design a sixcylindered engine of 60-80 h.p. The vehicle is at present being operated on a 20-mile route from Perth to Blairgowns, and is said to be the first rigid. frame six-wheeled passenger vehicle to be placed in service in Scotland.

As will be seen from our picture, the bodywork is carried right forward to the radiator, and this arrangement permits of a large space on the near side of the power unit being employed for the accommodation •of passengers' luggage. Moreover, it preserves the lines of the body and gives a better appearance to the vehicle as a whole.

The passengers' entrance is on the near side at the front, and the door3 ft. wide—which encloses it is operated by air pressure obtained from the Westinghouse air cylinder forming part of the braking equipment of the vehicle. A 6-in, lever at the driver's tight band has three positions—open, neutral and closed. After the lever has been put into position either for opening or closing the door, it is returned to the neutral point, and when this is done the door can be band-operated by

either the conductor or e An emergency door is incorporated in the design of the back panel, and this can be easily opened from either the inside or outside by a quick-acting lever.

With the exception of two windows above the rear wheels on each side. which can only be lowered so far as the wheel arches permit, all the lights, which are of the frameless variety, can

be lowered into the panels. The Dshaped windows are, of course, fixed.

The seating is arranged on conventional lines, that is to say,the seats all face in the forward direction and are disposed at each side of a central gangway. There are 10 seats. each for two people, on the off side and nine seats, each for the same number of passengers, on the near side. Each Pair of seats is 34 ins, wide, and that ample knee room

is allowed can be gathered from the fact that the distance between seats is 281ins. Well-sprung cases are used for the seats, and the upholstery is carried out in red antique leather.

The interior decoration of the body has received much attention, as has the ' subject of lighting. The floor is covered with linoleum and has detachable sections which permit easy access to be had to those parts of the chassis which are likely to require periodical attention. The floor level is 2 ft. 4 ins. from the ground, and the space separating the floor from the roof is 6 ft. 2 ins., so that ample headroom is available.

The vehicle is painted in Columbia red with a waist panel of dark blue, the lettering which it bears being carried out in gold.
