Between 6 April and 1 October, the default retirement age is being phased out. It's now too late to use DRA to compulsorily retire an employee — the last day to give the required six months' notice was 30 March.
Employers and employees can get advice from ACAS, which has produced a booklet called Working without the DRA. ACAS is also running a training course for employers called Age and the repeal of the default retirement age.
ACAS explains: "The removal of the DRA not only raises practical issues for employers in managing older workers, but also in areas such as succession and workforce planning, performance management and ensuring consistency and fairness in their policies and practices. The removal of the DRA has implications for all employees in terms of career expectations and advancement."
