Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MAY I EXPRESS how much! have enjoyed the series of articles on "Greatest Vehicles". I have learnt so much about some of the older trucks from this series, some I remember from boyhood and some [ certainly do not!

However, I would like to clarify the point raised in a letter from Robin Hannay. He states that 6.25:1 is a lower ratio than 7:1.1t is true that it is a numerically lower ratio, hut that means that it is a mechanically higher ratio.

A 7:1 ratio will give a greater torque multiplication, hut at a reduced output speed. commonly known as a "lower gear".

If you take a 1:1 gear ratio (known as direct drive), then move numerically further from that point, you will achieve a larger torque multiplication the further you go using numbers greater than one, ie. 7:1 is a greater reduction ratio than 6.25:1. On the other hand, the further you go with numbers less than one, the torque output will be reduced, but the speed will be increased, this is known as an overdrive ratio. (eg 0.2:1) I'll take off my anorak now.
