TRUCKPOL has again warned that criminals are reverting to old tactics to get drivers to stop their trucks.

DS Mark Hooper, head of the road freight crime unit, says there have been a number of recent incidents where thieves have stolen the trailer's registration plate and then used it to flag the vehicle down. He says: "When the truck driver pulls over to retrieve the plate, the driver is attacked and the vehicle is stolen."

He adds that several calls have been made to transport offices from people claiming to be police officers, requiring the mobile phone number of a truck driver on some pretext.

Hooper warns: "No genuine police officer will try and stop a lorry on the move without allowing their number to be verified. If calls are received, ask for the caller's full ID and a police control room (landline) number through which to verify the request. If the police really want the vehicle stopped, they will call fora marked car to come and help them do so."
