• Independent recovery operators say a letter sent to them by the RAC last week is interpreted as a veiled threat that the motoring club could withdraw its business.
The letter allegedly hints that the RAC would cease to give business to all Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators' members who represent a quarter of all RAC suppliers: the RAC denies it is threatening this. But the motoring club is accusing AVRO of competing with it and the other major motoring clubs for police removal and recovery contracts.
This precludes the associa• tion of fulfilling its role as an independent voice of the industry, says the RAC.
AVRO says the decision to bid for police contracts was taken by its elected regional division heads: its interest in bidding for the work is so that it stays within "the trade" rather than being taken over by the motoring organisations.
