But more than 4,000 drivers have signed a petition in support of the mobile cafe beside the Al2 at Marlesford since the DOT announced in October it would block off the road.

Cafe owner Jock McCabe says that, in three years, two of his tea wagons have been attacked by arsonists and a third stolen: a sign saying the layby had been closed was also erected.

McCabe says his is the only the layby between Great Yarmouth and London with good access and food. "Drivers are coming from Yarmouth and their 41/t hours are up. This is the only place you can get a trailer and truck in together," he says.

The Highways Agency insists McCabe has no rights of tenure: its action is in response to complaints from local residents.
