• The IV142 is set to be widened to form a 10-lane superhighway under proposals launched last week by the Department of Transport.
It wants to add an extra lane either side of the threelane carriageways, plus two "auxiliary lanes" to cater for local junction-hopping traffic, The vital stretch of motorway which links the M40 and M6 is already nearing its capacity.
The DOT has announced the roads it plans to include in the Trans-European Road Network (TERN).They include many trunk roads, including the M1,A1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M20,M40 and M62.
TERN designated routes could attract EU funding.
