• Senior management at Britain's seven Traffic Area Offices say there will be less effective screening of new 0licence applicants if a 20% efficiency target, similar to that demanded of the Vehicle Inspectorate, is carried through (CM 2-8 June).
The managers are responsible for co-ordinating enforcement between the Licensing Authorities and traffic and vehicle examiners, The Government has already refused to pledge that it will replace the North West Traffic Area Licensing Authority Martin Albu when he retires next year. One source says: If there are fewer and larger traffic areas, then they are more likely to be more remote from the industry they serve."
