• Two unused single, spinesemi-trailers built almost 10 years ago have just gone into service with the special produce carrier, The Kent Connection.
Built in 1979 by Monochrome (Engineering), — an offshoot of Chris Hudson haulage — the trailers were more or less forgotten when Chris Hudson went into receivership and was subsequently taken over by Allport Freight in October the same year. The original plywood floors have been replaced with heavy duty keruing timber, the chassis lengthened and widened, and the trailers have been fitted with new curtain-sided bodies built by Southflelds Coachworks.
Tandem-axle running gear has also been fitted with wide single 15-22.5 tyres, and the trailers have been plated at 30.4 tonnes gross weight, allowing the vehicle to operate at 38 tonnes.
