The danger that many cyclists present to drivers as well as to themselves is emphasised by recent studies by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. These show that in a certain town about a quarter of the cyclists had no visible lights at the front and rear. Many of them were without one or both lamps.
Moreover, half the cyclists questioned said that their front lights could not reveal obstructions and potholes on unlit roads. They could easily fall off their bikes to be run over by a passing vehicle.
The Bill to encourage the creation of cycleways, now before Parliament, is thus to be welcomed. So is the network of cycle routes being built in London. The first, a two-mile stretch in Haringey, has already been opened. It is, however, unlikely to be used by that intrepid cyclist, Norman Tebbit, as he is at present promoting the new BL Montego car.
