JOHN BULL Tyres of Chesterfield has pioneered a new method of tyre deliveries with the introduction of specially designed stepframe trailers. Six Craven Tasker Taskloader trailers have been introduced to the distribution fleet, which is operated by BRS Midlands under a contract fleet management agreement.
The trailers feature sliding doors for threeway access and are designed to ensure the efficient nationwide distribution of new car and truck tyres, new tractor tyres, tyre remoulds, batteries and engine oil.
They consist of 33ft and 40ft step frames which enable products to be off loaded from the back of the trailer and tyres collected for remoulding loaded from the side using the sliding doors.
John Bull Tyres, part of the Kenning Motor Group, is the first company to introduce the trailers for tyre deliveries to more than 700 outlets throughout the country.
Ian Veitch, manager of BRS Midlands Chesterfield branch, said: "The new equipment enables far easier delivery and collection together with added security over normal curtainsided trailers. The step frame means that between 240 and 250 truck tyres can be carried at one time compared with 180 using conventional equipment — a 30% increase for just a 5% increase in transport costs".
Under the fleet management package, BRS Midlands provides eight vehicles, comprising three rigids, four tractive units and a shunting truck for the warehouse, and are also responsible for employing seven drivers. BRS's involvement even extends to providing a warehouse team and full time manager who coordinates distribution operations from John Bull's 60,000 square foot warehouse at Clay Cross. Regular servicing of the vehicles, transport documentation and stock control is also handled by BRS.
