• Haulage contractor John Pattison, of Parr Lane, Bury, was fined £250 at Liverpool magistrates' court last week after pleading guilty to handling 504 cases of stolen apples valued at £1000.
The court heard that a lorry loaded with apples was stolen from a Liverpool warehouse on May 26 this year and later found empty and abandoned in another part of Liverpool.
Mr Anthony Carter, prosecuting, said that when police visited a Bury railway arch used by Pattison as a warehouse they discovered 412 cartons of apples.
When questioned he said: "I went to the market and a driver unloading apples asked me if I wanted to buy some for £1 a box. It's the first time I have ever become involved in anything to do with stolen property."
He was told by Mrs M. Cumella, presiding magistrate, that it was his previous good character only that had saved him from a prison sentence.
