the front wheels of a lorry to eliminate wobble and that wobble can create a dangerous steering condition. A friend has suggested that balancing the wheels of a tandem-axle bogie could be advantageous. What is your view?
ALack of balance of the rear wheels in
creases tyre wear, notably when the vehicle is running light and the axle is undamped. Moreover, imbalance of the wheels of a tandem bogie can produce a condition that affects the handling of the vehicle when it is lightly loaded by virtue of intermittent phasing of diagonally-opposite wheels.
This phenomenon results from the centre of gravity of the unbalanced weight of one of each diagonal pair of wheels being radially opposite to the weight of the other wheel of the pair which causes each pair to tramp in phase with the other pair and results in twisting of the frame in addition to severe wheel bounce. The bounce amplitude can far exceed the normal amplitude of a single unbalanced wheel.
