EXPRESS CARRIERS BENEFIT FROM UNITY.

That the National Conference of express Carriers has had, and will have, a real contribution to make towards the whole structure of the road and rail collaboration at present taking place, was stated by Mr. James Paterson (Carter Paterson and Co., Ltd.) at the first luncheon of the Conference, on Tuesday. Mr. Paterson was in the chair.

Mr. R. W. Sewill, of A.R.O., mentioned his appreciation of the part which the Conference has played in such matters. He said he could wish the Conference were a section of some larger organization but that must not be discussed then.

Mr. Sewill stated that there was no nefarious scheme on the part of the railways to annex trunk haulage. Among other prominent guests were Mr. F. G. Bristow, Mr. Donaldson

Wright, Mr. Quick Smith and Mr. W. J. Elliot.

Following the luncheon, the general meeting took place and was followed by a discussion on co-operation between parcels carriers.

The first annual report stated that membership had steadily increased and that the Conference now includes practically every large operator and

many small ones. The support of certain corporations had been secured, also some parcel-carrying bus and tram companies. The financial position was entirely satisfactory.

The executive council for the ensuing year is as follows:— Ex Oftiolo Members: Mr. J. Paterson (president); Mr. W. J. Elliot, Sir Maxwell Hicks, and Mr. D. Richardson Ivice-presidents). Area Representatives: Scotland: Mr. R. II. Palmer; Northern England: Mr. J. Forman; Manchester and East LatICS: Mr. G. Cooke; Liverpool and North Wales Mr. D. McLachlan: Leeds and Hull: Mr. R. C.M.U.A. Members Visit Champion Factory.

Two parties of members of the Commercial Motor Users' Association recently visited the Champion sparking plug factory on the Great West Road, FeItham, Middlesex. Members were interested in the unique Sinment compression seal. This method of construction is used both for sealing the centre electrode into the insulator and the completed core into the shell, and eliminates leakage troubles. • Military Training for Tractor Drivers.

The Tractor Users' Association has been in communication with the Ministry of Labour regarding the position under the Military Training Act of employees of contractors who undertake ploughing with tractors for farmers. The Association is informed that the provisions covering agricultural works also apply to these men.
