Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SIMPLE, but apparently very ±11_ effective, device for lessening the rebound of springs on motor vehicles has recently been protected and will soon be placed on the market for great Britain, Ireland and the Colonies by J. Harrison Carter, Ltd„ Dunstable.

Reference to our drawinga will snow clearly the general arrangement and details of the damper. It consists of a phosphor-bronze case mounted eccentrically, in which is a wheel Need with Ferodo or other friction material of this type. The axis of the wheel is extended at one side to bear in the case and at the other to pass through the cover and to carry, on a key and secured by a nut, a long arm, by which it is connected to the axle...-.

Mounted at each side of the Ferodofaced wheel is a curved piece of steel tapered to give a wedging action. Each of the curved wedges thus formed is carried by a link fuIcrumed in a forkended pin, the upper portion of which is threaded and passes first through a cup containing a light compression spring, then through the screwed cover over this spring ; a nut and look-nut complete this part of the apparatus. Adjustment of these lifts the curved wedges to any desired extent, whilst the action of the compression spring tends to press the wedges downwards between the casing and the friction wheel to the limit permitted.

friction wheel is..turned by the lever, one wedge tends to be drawn into the narrowing space between the friction wheel and the casing, whilst the other tends to be forced out of contact. With the wheel rotating in the opposite direction, the effect is reversed, the wedge previously frele now coming into action, whilst that which was previously gripped is freed. The wedges can be so adjusted that, whilst one gives a powerful damping effect, the other can be coniparatively free ; thus the aile to which the lever is connected can be allowed to rise freely, but is checked as it drops, or the wedges can be adjusted to give an equal effect in either direction, and any wear in the friction wheel or the wedges etfn he taken up in a few moments.
