• A tanker driver had a miraculous escape last week after his vehicle careered out of control at Carlisle's busiest roundabout on New Year's day.
Cumbrian driver lain Pattinson escaped with minor injuries after being thrown from his 32-tonne Volvo FM10 as it rolled over four times and smashed through metal barriers, crushing the cab to less than a foot in height.
Pattinson suffered cuts to his head and hand but was discharged from Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary after a check-up.
Paramedics and fire-fighters reached the crash scene and were astonished to find the driver standing beside the wrecked tanker, which had spilled more than half of its 20,000-litre load of milk.
"That man's got to be one of the luckiest men alive," says Susannah Williamson, who called the emergency services after witnessing the crash from the nearby Shell Garage where she works.
