Repair study • A study of the UK vehicle body repair industry has been announced by the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association. It has commissioned management consultant Coopers & Lybrand to look at ways of ensuring that the industry can operate on a sound economic basis in the future.

Tranman for council • A fleet management system, Tranman, is being used by the City of Sunderland's Public Works Department so that it can compete better for contracts, according to BIS Information systems.

BIS says that Tranman handles all charging types and monitors profit for the contractor. For the client, the integral hiring module provides cost comparisons between in-house and external options.

At Sunderland, Tranman is being used to monitor vehicles which are hired both internally and externally.

Keep right on • Free membership of breakdown recovery service Europe Net is being offered to International Diesel Service cardholders.

IDS is a service from Kuwait Petroleum giving access to a network of automated diesel fuelling locations. Its customers obtain roadside assistance by quoting their IDS card numbers. Should further repair work be necessary, Europe Net invoices customers directly.

PUBLICATIONS International scene • The 12th edition of the Handbook of International Road Transport is available from the International Road Transport Union.

Country by country it lists national legislation relating to international road transport and is in English, French and German. It costs 150 Swiss Francs (£70).

VAT views • Customs & Excise has begun a review of the VAT repayment supplement regime. It is asking for views on a consultation paper, Code of Conduct, which has been issued to trade and professional bodies.

Any VAT registered trader who wants to comment directly is asked to write by 15 January to the VAT Central Unit, RS Review Team, 7th Floor, Alexander House, Victoria Avenue, Southend on Sea, Essex SS99 IAA.

Woking title • The 50th edition of Kitchin's Road Transport Law is now available, published by Transport Law Services of Woking, priced at £25.00. It is edited by CM's legal eagle Jim Duckworth, who also produces the CM/Leyland Daf Law on the Wall charts.

In the latest volume there are a number of major revisions including details on LGV and PCV licensing and the revised enforcement rules on driving offences. There is also a full description of the changes to C&U regulations including the higher gross bogie and weight limits for artics, drawbars and rigids which came into effect last week.

Stay cool • A control unit claimed to ensure that the temperature in a reefer stays within one degree centigrade of the set figure has been developed by Thermo King Europe. Temperature modulation is claimed to give fuel savings of 24% over conventional units.
