a practical step towards environmentally friendly transport by introducing a petrol-electric hybrid version of its TurboDaily bus. At least two will be supplied to Transit Holdings for use in Oxford and Exeter.
The 25-seat Altrobus is driven by a 22kW (29hp) DC motor through a conventional drivetrain to give a top speed of 55Iun/h (34mph). Lead-acid batteries are charged by a generator driven by a catalystequipped 997cm3 Fiat petrol engine running at a constant 3,000rpm. This can be switched off in environmentally sensitive areas.
Iveco has no plans to introduce a similar commercial vehicle — the Altrobus chassis costs over twice as much as a TurboDaily — but the EC may provide financial incentives for operators to use hybrid PCVs.
