• Land Rover has lost the battle with arch-rival Steyr Daimler Puch to supply the Swiss Army with over 4,000 4x4 vehicles, in an order believed to be worth more than £80 million.
• Tayside police are warning HGV drivers that stickers, pennants and other adornments to vehicle windscreens obstruct the driver's view and contravene the Construction and Use regulations.
Deputy chief constable Ronald Arthur says that vehicle owners have an obligation to ensure their drivers comply with the regulations. Warnings are being given at present, but drivers who persist in obscuring their view could well be prosecuted.
• Curt Goransson, the truck and 1986 world truck racing champion, who suffered serious injuries in a logging accident (CM 22 December-6 January) was released from hospital on Monday. His manager, Axel Sandstedt, says Goransson will have recovered in time for the first race of next season at Brands Hatch on 9-10 April.
• Thieves struck at Berresford Quarry, Northumberland, during the night of 21 December last year and stole a 6x 4 Leyland Reiver tipper with insulated body belonging to ownerdriver Alan Smith.
The registration of the three-axle rigid is BEU656T and it is finished in Tarmac Roadstone colours. Anyone with information should call (043-481) 249.
• The 28,000-strong United Road Transport Union (URTU) is to offer help to any members who face losing their driving licences on medical grounds. For £6 per year threatened URTU drivers will be provided with legal and medical experts to help retain their licence. Should these efforts fail a lump sum of 22,500 will be paid.
