• The Government is resisting European Commission proposals to spend £42 million on research into the electronic transfer of information to and between vehicles.
Ministers believe the programme is too costly and that the proposed two-and-a-half year time scale is not long enough.
Under the Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe (DRIVE) research is envisaged in areas like route guidance, extension of driver vision in fog as well as devices to extend driver vision, allow vehicles to travel together under automatic control, prevent junction accidents and stop vehicles leaving the road.
MPs on the Select Committee on European Legislation have called for a debate to be held on the subject.
