• The Department of Transport has issued consultation documents on its proposal that all freight vehicles should be weighed before they are allowed to board cross-Channel ferries. It wants to implement new legislation to this effect by 1 December 1988.
The Freight Transport Association says it is concerned "at any delays likely to occur as a result of the weighing requirement" and suggests that a time limit should be included in the regulations to give operators a working guideline. Freight Transport Association international and customs procedures manager Dave Green says that he cannot see how such information will be of "practical use" to ferry operators.
The DTp circular proposes that port authorities will be responsible for providing the weighbridges and issuing drivers with weight slips, and that drivers will only commit an offence if they supply false information.
According to the DTp, the sole purpose of weighing each truck is to ensure that the total vehicle weight loading is made known to a ferry operator so that it can ensure the safety and stability of the vessel.
