• The Government is being urged not to dodge safety issues following its recentlypublished review of road safety strategy, Road Safety — The Next Step.

The Bus & Coach Council says: "We welcome the Gov ernment's initiative in instituting the review in the first place and we fully support their conclusion that further research is needed, but we are disappointed that our industry's excellent road safety record and the many voluntary safety measures that we have introduced were not even mentioned." The BCC is concerned that most of the essential research costs will have to be met by the industry and calls on the Government to make a more realistic financial commitment to meet those costs.

The council is also disturbed that the report places little emphasis on driver awareness training when driver error is the primary cause of 70% of all accidents.

The BCC wants more involvement with the Government on such matters and has already suggested areas of study whose results would serve as a model and basis for further research.

Any research must be aimed at a positive objective and must not be purely academic or a duplication of existing studies, says the BCC.
