THE ROYAL MAIL is buying nearly £3m-worth of Leyland trucks, to help maintain its position in the competitive parcels market.
Leyland won the order in the face of fierce competition from other British and several foreign manufacturers.
The order is for 60 Roadtrains built at Leyland in Lancashire and 70 Chieftains made at Bathgate in Scotland.
Some are additional vehicles and others are to replace those which are no longer economic to operate. Delivery of these vehicles is scheduled for early in the new year.
Both vehicles are used for trunking parcels between main towns and cities and to docks and ports. The new order will bring the tally of Roadtrains to 135 and Chieftains to 245. The Royal Mail now has a fleet of 27,000 vehicles.
