• SMMT president and Lucas chairman Kenneth Corley becomes a Knight Bachelor in the New Years Honours list, and other KBs include Colin Buchanan, professor of transport, and Peter Masefield, who is a patron of the Industrial Transport Association. ITA chairman A. E. Higginson receives an MBE, and there are OBEs for PRTA secretary Robert Howlett, for Joe McCoy, until recently in charge of bus operations for London Transport, and for Trevor Thornton, who has just retired as managing director of Northern Ireland Carriers. Dr Fogg of British Leyland receives a CBE.
