• After testing 32 cars on short-term hire, finding 12 with serious defects and only four in good condition. Motoring Which? has suggested that vehicle hire firms should be licensed. The magazine is published by the Consumers' Association.
Motoring Which? says that hire firms should be subjected to spot-checks on the mechanical condition of their vehicles and that any firm with a poor record should have its licence withdrawn. Firms should be fully responsible, says the report, for the good and safe condition of their cars and should not be able to contract out of liabilities by exclusion clauses in their contracts.
The report, in the January 1972 issue, covers both national and local car hire concerns.
