GLASGOW City Council plans to get tough with motorists who are preventing the city's public transport system from operating efficiently and economically by blocking the roads.
In the week before Christmas city bus services lost 4,990 miles because of traffic congestion, compared with 3,156 miles in the same week of 1964. This was reported to the transport committee by the general manager, Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, on December 24.
Cllr. William M. Lee told the transport committee that the Council would wage war against the motorists who hurt the passenger services. A police compound is being prepared south of the river and all cars creating palpable obstruction will be towed there by the police. Fines of £2 plus cost of towing will be imposed.
Life would be made unbearable by the private motorist who selfishly used valuable space and clogged the city streets, said Mr. Lee. Without the measures outlined, the municipal transport system would grind to a halt.
