ANUMBER of garages in the West Midlands were without petrol this week because of an unofficial ban on overtime by tanker drivers employed at the Stourport depot of the Regent Oil Co. Ltd. However, the ban was lifted on Wednesday to allow pay negotiations to continue.
The dispute involved 100 TGWU members. According to Mr. Alan Law, regional commercial trade group secretary of the union, the men were promised a basic wage of about £22 a week plus allowances to bring their money up to £25 for a 40-hour week. But this was not implemented On December 1, as intended, because the firm fell into line with other oil companies who offered a £21 basic wage.
A Regent spokesman said the company did not wish to prejudice national discussions involving a productivity agreement by making local arrangements such as those suggested by the Stourport employees.
