THE air express Containerway service of Anglo-Continental Container Services Ltd. was officially inaugurated at London Airport on Monday by Sir Francis Evans, the Ulster Government's agent hi Great Britain. Witnessed by a party of journalists, agents and officials from ACC S, Transport Holding Company, British Road Services and British European Airways, Sir Francis sealed the first container prior to it being loaded on a Belfast-bound BEA Vanguard operating a normal passenger domestic flight.
In a speech which followed, Sir Francis outlined the importance of container services between England and Ulster, particularly an airborne service with its elements of high speed and uninterrupted direct transit, eliminating damaging repetitive handling and opportunities for pilferage.
The party then visited the Hayes depot of Roy Bowles Transport Ltd., the hauliers responsible for the making up and road transportation of the containers. (This company's air freight activities were described in COMMERCIAL MOTOR, December 17.) On return to London Airport the party witnessed the arrival, in another Vanguard, of two containers from Belfast.
Details of the new service were given in COMMERCIAL MOTOR, December 10. It is essentially an express service for "smalls" freight on regular BA domestic services, but there are plans to extend to the Continent.
The company has 24 purpose-built containers constructed by Luralda Ltd. specially to accommodate the forks of a lift truck. The containers have a tare weight of 60+ kg. (1 cwt. 21 lb.) and can carry Up to 10 cwt. payload. N.H.T.
