As the floor is not impeded it is possible, in new bodies, to provide a well at the rear to carry offal trays without detracting from the ease of loading and unloading.
A body of this type, incorporating the gear, has recently been built. The loading gear consists of a hinged arm which extends across the back of the vehicle. A manually operated winch is used to raise and lower this arm, to the transverse member of which two or more swivel-mounted clips to take meat hooks are secured.
The clips line up with longitudinal runners mounted to the underside of the body roof. The transfer of the suspended meat from the arm to the runners is automatic. When unloading, a safety pawl ensures that the hook carrying the meat is transferred from the runner to the clip on the loading arm.
At storage depots, where the meat quarters or carcasses are conveyed on overhead runways, it has been found that special cams fitted at the rear of the vehicle facilitate transfer from the runways to the loading gear. Up to three quarters of beef can be handled at one time by the winch gear, but the operative's efforts can be augmented by an electric motor using mains current.
Twelve interlocking offal trays can be carried in the dropped well at the rear. In transit, they are enclosed by the folding tailboard step.
