THREAT to the industry," was how Mr. R. Gresham Cooke, director of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, described the Potato Marketing Board's proposal to manufacture vehicles, during an inquiry in London on Monday into the Board's scheme for regulating potato dis.tribtifion.
Mr. Cooke said that the motor industry was capable of meeting the potato trade's requirements. If the Board made vehicles, some of the motor industry's home trade would be lost and the cost of exports would rise. The potato trade had never made demands on the transport industry which could not be met.
As reported in The Commercial Motor last week, the S.M.M.T. oppose an attempt by the Milk Marketing Board to secure powers to manufacture vehicles and plant.
