• Following the collapse of its original UK importer — Isuzu GB — the Japanese 4x4 Isuzu Trooper has finally arrived in Britain through new importers, International Motors.
Birmingham-based IM, which already brings in the Korean-built Hyundai and Japanese Subaru commercials, will be offering four Trooper models, based on two different wheelbases, with the choice of either a petrol or turbocharged diesel engine.
The single overhead camshaft 2.3 litre petrol engine produces 81kW (108hp) at 4,600rpm and has a peak torque of 167Nm (123Ibft) at 2,600rpm. The 2.2-litre indirect-injection diesel is rated at 55kW (74hp) and has a maximum torque of 155Nm (114Ibft) delivered at 2,50Orpm.
All Troopers come with a five-speed gearbox as standard, with twoand four-wheel drive, plus a four-wheel-drive low-ratio transfer box. Automatic freewheeling hubs are standard along with torsion bar front suspension and a semielliptic leaf-sprung rear axle.
The specification also includes power-assisted steering, central locking and a limited slip differential, and headlamp washers at no extra cost.
According to International Motor's chairman Robert Ed
miston, the Trooper will be Isuzu's principal vehicle in the UK: "It will complement the Subaru range of cars, vans and pickups."
The initial Trooper dealer network will consist of around 70 distributors, recruited from International Motors' Subaru franchises and the old Isuzu GB network. The new importer subsidiary of IM will be called Isuzu (UK).
Prices for the short-wheelbase three-door petrol Trooper is 28,695 plus VAT, while the turbo-diesel version costs 29,564 plus VAT. The petrol-engined five-door longwheelbase Trooper is priced at £10,434 plus VAT, while the turbo-diesel model costs 211,304 plus VAT.
