• Charthire Services, the Scottish transport and distribution company, has changed its name to Chart Services. The switch reflects the growth of the company's contract distribution business, for which the name Charthire was deemed inappropriate. In future Chart Services will be split into two divisions, Chart Hire Services, for contract hire and truck rental, and Chart Distribution Services, which will handle contract distribution.
• Harrow-based British Tissues has taken full control of the warehousing and distribution company Gloystarne Group, for an undisclosed sum. Gloystarne operates a fleet of 45 vehicles in the Rotherham area of South Yorkshire, and has warehousing facilities in Rotherham and East Anglia. Ron Day, British Tissues managing director, says: "We shall be looking to develop Gloystarne's transport and warehousing operations and we will be retaining the Gloystarne name."
• Parcels carrier Federal Express has revised its European next-day service with improved delivery coverage in Britain.
Federal has expanded the previous two-day delivery operation, which was limited to Greater London and the South-East, to a five-day service covering most parts of the country.
• Lorry traffic through the port of Dover rose by 7.5% last year from 798,376 in 1985, to 857,774. Coach traffic also rose, from 117,669 in 1985 to 121,951 last year — an increase of 3.6%.
