LICENCES for lorries of 10 tons and over probably bring in about 000,000 a year—but that is not enough to satisfy all IVI.P.s. "Some of us doubt whether these vehicles are making a full contribution towards the cost of the wear and tear they cause to the roads, particularly in view of the problem which their proliferation is causing to the railways and the constant loss to the revenue ", said Mr. Simon Wingfield Digby (Tory, Dorset West) in the Commons this week.
The £600,000 was mentioned by Mr. Alan Green, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, who added that precise figures were not available, but an estimate of the yield from these vehicles based on a survey indicated an annual revenue of approximately this amount.
