Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Imperial Tankers plans to merge with another UK tanker operator by 1990, and the strongest contender is thought to be Sadler Tankers of Thornaby in Cleveland.

Sadler Tanker's chairman and managing director Phil Gate says: "We are always looking to expand our activities. If suggestions for a merger were viable, we would look at it very closely."

Imperial Tankers also plans to strengthen its presence in 'the chemical capital' of the North by acquiring a larger depot in Merseyside by next spring. The company, which was formed by a management buyout last April, says it also wants to establish a partnership with a European haulier — probably in Holland, Germany or Belgium — in 1991.
