Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

QRecently the FTA came to analyse our tacho charts and told us to mark a line on the charts to show starting and finishing times. I was stopped shortly afterwards and was told by the DoE examiner that I could be prosecuted for writing outside the centre field. I later asked the Traffic Office which told me that the DoE was wrong and that the FICA was right. Could you please help me with this?

IB, N Ireland AYou should not write on the face of the chart for a few simple reasons: If you forget to remove the chart at any time, the traces would go over your writing and could lead to interpretation problems. Secondly, if you finish a day early and sign off the chart and then you are sent out again, you could possibly have to use a second chart if your writing obliterates the second start time. Lastly, EC regulations 3821/85 are specific about what information is required on the chart and they do not mention making lines on the chart signifying starting or finishing times,

If you need to do this, put it on the back. Incidently, it is an offence to leave the chart in for longer than 24 hours.
