• Ford is working on a series of major developments to its 2.5-litre direct-injection diesel used in the Transit.
The moves, designed to increase the popular diesel's power and refinement, include the use of two-stage injectors to cut down on the harshness associated with direct injection, and the development of a fullscale turbocharged engine.
Two-stage injection has been used by Perkins in its two-litre Prima engine, adopted by Leyland Daf in the 200 Series, and by Land Rover in the new 200 Tdi diesel introduced in the Discovery.
At the recent Autotech show, Kevin Holmes, senior applications engineer for Stanadyne, whose slim-tip injectors are used in the Transit, confirmed that the company has prepared two-spring injectors, and that it is involved in research with Ford. Another source has indicated that Ford is about to make a decision on the injectors.
The long-overdue turbocharged version of the DI engine is expected to arrive during 1991. Although Ford has responded to market pressure
by marketing a turbo (CM 27 July-2 August), it is based on the previous generation of engines, and is handicapped by its low power output and small production volumes.
Technical difficulties have prevented Ford from introduc ing a full-scale blown version its latest diesel, but it is thought that the new develof ment is spurred on by the company's desire to use the engine in its larger saloon cal Ford currently buys Peugeot engines to use in the Granad
