• Maintenace problems have led South Eastern Licensing Authority Brigadier Michael Turner to suspend the licence held by Southampton-based Swanwick Construction for three months.

At a public inquiry in Portsmouth, vehicle examiner Richard Britten said he had issued 15 prohibition notices to the company's vehicles since 1987. Some prohibitions had been varied and clearance had been refused. The company had twice been convicted of using vehicles with defective brakes, and a recent maintenance investigation had resulted in a number of immediate and delayed prohibitions.
