• Worries over congestion in the roads surrounding the Howden operating centre of Ringrose Howden Haulage have led to the company's licence only being renewed for three years by North Eastern Deputy Licensing Authority H Anthony Richardson.

The company had sought renewal for 30 vehicles and 60 trailers, with 20 vehicles and five trailers based at Howden, and five vehicles and 55 trailers at Goole. Continuation at Howden was opposed by Humberside County Council and there were environmental representations from four neighbouring residents. Resident Michael Kemp expressed concern about congestion in Halegate, particularly at school times, though he conceded the company had made great efforts to avoid the area at those times.

Kemp complained about being distrubed by vehicles leaving as early as 03:30hrs and said that the operating centre was now in an inappropriate location. There were many listed buildings nearby, without any real foundations, and damage was already apparent to the company's own buildings.

Another resident, Stephen Smith, feared that more frequent use might be made of an entrance in Bridgegate.

Alan Stirling, team leader of the county's traffic management group, said the centre of Howden was designated as an outstanding conservation area and was subject to a zonal weight restriction. He maintained that the premises, which were surrounded by residential property, were incapable of accommodating 20 vehicles and five trailers.

For the company John 'Taylor said Ringrose had operated from the site concerned for over 50 years. The application was in effect for a renewal without change.

Managing director Fred Ringrose said that the trailers were usually kept at Goole, only going to Howden for maintenance. It was possible to get the tractor units into the premises: they had been doi it for long enough. The Brid gate entrance was rarely us( and he did not forsee any alteration to that pattern.
