Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Transfleet Services and Chart Distribution Services, which are jointly owned by Lex Services and Lombard North Central, are to rationalise their operations. Chart now controls distribution, with Transfleet taking control of truck rental and contract hire for both firms.

Transfleet plans to integrate its truck rental and contract hire division by the end of next April. More than 2,000 vehicles have been transferred from Chart.

Transfleet has 30 depots at present and takes on another eight from Chart and plans to open a further 10 within the next three years. One depot is to close in Glasgow and the existing two in Bristol will be rationalised into a single larger one. The depot at Ilkeston is to close with operations being transferred to Nottingham.

The company says there will be few redundancies, with most employees being incorporated into the new operations. Contracts with Pirelli, NatWest and Puritan Maid will be transferred to Transfleet to join existing deals with the Burton Group, Asda and Group Four.

Chart Distribution Services, which merged its distribution division with Transfleet's in October, takes on 40 vehicles. It also gets four warehouses in Penkridge, Derby, Saffron Walden and Bury St Edmunds, but says it will now have to close three of its depots.

Although all other distribution services are handled by Chart, Transfleet will retain the Marks and Spencer contract. However, Chart has taken control of contracts with Shell, BP, Allied Mills and Hamleys. These join existing contracts with ICI and Chippendale Kitchens.
