• Over 26,000 trucks, vans and public service vehicles are subject to the latest safety recalls issued by the Vehicle Inspectorate section of the Department of Transport. Details of the recalls for commercial vehicles are listed below. Those operating vehicles included in the recall programme should contact the manufacturer's main agent as soon as possible if they have not done so already.

Model: Bedford Rascal pickup.

Build dates: 1 July '89-29 July '89. Vehicle ident nos: JV620676-JV624245. Defects: Spot-welding integrity suspect on front and rear suspension mounting and chassis member, battery box tray, fuel tank mounting and gearbox crossmember.

Remedy: Inspect affected vehicles, check and rework as necessary.

Number of vehicles involved: 173.

Model: ERF SP4A.

Build dates: Oct '88-Jan '89.

Vehicle ident nos: 60148-62497. Defect: Foul condition between front nearside brake hose and tyre on full lock. Remedy: Check hose for damage, replace as necessary and reclip hose. Numbers involved: 1,310.

Model: ERF E-Series.

Build dates: April '86-Feb '89.

Vehicle ident nos: 52702-62975. Defect: Insecure engagement of Bendix S6 hand-valve locking sleeve can lead to accidental release of park brake.

Remedy: Replace S6 valve with a unit of different manufacture.

Numbers involved: 6,500.

Model: ERF C and E-Series tractive units.

Build dates: Oct '83-Nov '88.

Vehicle ident nos: 48616-60064. Defect: If brake is incorrectly adjusted and lining to drum clearance becomes excessive, it is possible for the S-cam/shoe roller to drop out.

Remedy: Fit spring clip to secure roller to shoe.

Numbers involved: 6,81L Model: Ford Transit '86 LCY fitted with heavy-duty steering (SVO 7551).

Build dates: Dec '85-Jan '87.

Vehicle ident nos: FE, GL, GY, GS, GT, GJ, GU, GM, GP, GB, GR, GA, GG, HC, HK, HD, HE, HL, HY, HS, HT, HJ, HU and HM.

Defect: The heavy-duty steering column fitted as an option has a single universal joint fitted. This joint may fail owing to the fatigue caused by a misalignment of the shaft causing side loads.

Remedy: Replace steering box and convert column/steering-box coupling to a two universal joint system.

Numbers involved: 500.

Model: lveco Ford 45.10 and 49.10. Build dates: Nov '87-Sept '88.

(49.10) 6078-0010124.

Defect: The fitment of unspecified washers between the steering box and suspension may compromise security of steering.

Remedy: Replace suspect washers with quality assured items.

Numbers involved: 390.

Model: Leyland Daf 95-Series.

Build dates: May '87-Feb '89.

Vehicle ident nos: 298175-0E333014. Defect: Build up of carbon between starter terminal post and casing can cause a short circuit and lead to spontaneous starting of the engine.

Remedy: Reposition starter by rotating the assembly by 120 degrees.

Numbers involved: 2,633.

Model: Leyland Daf FAT 2300 and FAD 2500 with eight-rod rear suspension. Build dates: Sept '82-Mar '89.

Vehicle ident Ms: (FAT 2300) 235000 onwards. (FAD 2500) 234340 onwards. Defect: Operating arm of load-sensing valve can go over centre, allowing full air pressure to rear brakes in all conditions. Remedy: Fit an additional bracket to control arm movement.

Model: MCW Metrorider with CE30 Telma retarder.

Build dates: Various.

Vehicle ident nos: Various.

Defect: Failure of shaft within Telmar retarder may results in propshaft damaging underside of vehicle.

Remedy: Fit retaining straps around front and rear of propshaft.

Numbers involved: 298.

Model: Multicar M25 Series.

Build dates: 1982-1988.

Vehicle ident nos: Various.

Defects: Handbrake lever may have in

correctly hardened ratchet and welds mis sing at rear edge.

Remedy: Renew handbrake lever and

ratchet as necessary.

Numbers involved: 490. Model: Scania P and R Series.

Build dates: Oct '86 onwards.

Vehicle ident nos: SS11154 65SS1129994 and SN4256686-SN4263993. Defect: Lower plate on Bendix Westinghouse trailer hand control may be distorted leading to a slight air supply to trailer.

Remedy: Replace suspect valve with quality-assured component.

Numbers involved: 2,088.

Model: Scania 8x4.

Build dates: 1988.

Vehicle ident nos: SS1131101SS1135297, Defect: Short brake hose may have been fitted to offside first axle which, along with an incorrectly positioned elbow, may lead to a stretch condition at certain steering angles.

Remedy: Fit correct length brake hose and reposition elbow.

Numbers involved: 11.

Model: Seddon Atkinson all models except Strato.

Build dates: Sept '86-Feb '89.

Vehicle ident nos: 81178-85000. Defect: Faulty foot-valve seal may lead to reduction or loss of braking on primary and/or secondary circuits.

Remedy: Fit modified foot-valve seals. Numbers involved: 3,735.

Model: VW Transporter/Caravell with fuel-injected petrol engines.

Build dates: Jul '85-Aug '88.

Vehicle ident nos: 24/25 GH000 00124/25 KH019 148.

Defect: Cracking of fuel pipe between the pump and cylinders one and two may lead to a petrol leak.

Remedy: Replace suspect hose with modified type fitted with a protective sleeve.

Numbers involved: 704.

Model: Volvo Ailsa B55 MK1 coach. Build dates: 1973-1977.

Vehicle ident nos: 73001-77039. Defect: Corrosion fatigue on steering tie rod may lead to cracking of swaged ends and could result in loss of steering. Remedy: Thorough annual inspection of tie rod ends and replace as necessary. Numbers involved: 310.
