WITH Energy Conservation Year announced for 1986, could I appeal for your magazine to support two causes which I consider would save an enormous amount of had in this country.
Traffic lights which are fully operational on a seven day 24-hour basis are totally wasteful at non-peak periods in many areas. In this industry, we have to grind through the gears from a standing start for a traffic light which at many times of the day controls virtually no traffic flow at all. Could we not have the continental flashing light system for non-peak time operation? Just think of the fuel we would save in gear changes!
My second suggestion is that all light vehicles (commercial) should be diesel engined. This would reduce our fuel hills by 20 per cent for consumption alone and improve efficiency considerably. Let's hope the Chancellor will put a tax on all light vehciles persisting in using petrol engines after this budget. 'there are plenty of alternative diesel-engined vans for the customer to choose from now, and for the man who insists On petrol engines let him pay a taxation penalty accordingly.
