LEYLAND BUS is meeting new competition fiat its much threatened Thai bus deal.
The current rehashed Leyland Bus Company/MVA proposal to supply Leyland Olympian buses, depots and back-up facilities to the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority is reported to have been matched by a rival proposal by a consortium led by Singapore-based Motor and Leasing.
Motor and Leasing is controlled by a Malysian businessman, and has coachbuilding interests. Its proposals involve the supply of
over 2000, single-deck buses and the renovation of over 1,000 of BMTA's existing fleet.
The Motor and Leasing buses would be built by the Chai Yont bus company, a Thai company involved in the consortium. Engines would be supplied by Daewoo of South Korea, which makes MAN engines under licence.
One advantage that Motor Leasing has is the ability to accept payment in Thai currency. It also promises a higher proportion of local content than the Leyland deal.
