Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A HEAVY-DUTY brake for lorries, r-k buses and other large vehicles is disclosed in patent No. 898,646. Such brakes usuallY have wide shoes; this means long anchor pins, which in turn results in difficulty.I. of removal of shoes because of the long pull-off in a restricted. space. Such are the reasons put forward for an improved anchor pin shown in the patent. (Girling Ltd., Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham, 11.)

The drawing shows a„ partial view of the backplate from the inboard side. An elliptical boss (1), made from a casting or forging, is fixed to the backplate and is bored to receive the two anchor pins (2 and 3). The boss is a forked member so that the shoe ends (4) can enter.

The proposed method of fixing the pins is to provide each with -an annular groove (5) at the-inner end. A thin locking 'plate (6) is shaped to engage with the grooves and gives positive endwise location. The locking plate is held by a setscrew (7) secured by a wire.
