INTERVENTION by the Minister of

Labour to try te prevent .L the moving of a factory from Scotland to West Bromwich caused a London haulier, Alexandra Transport-. to modify by two vehicles a bid to vary an A licence by the addition of six furniture vans, the Metropolitan deputy Licensing Autherity was told on Wednesday, at the commencement of a hearing scheduled 1.6 Iast two days.

Mr. A. W. Balne, for the applicant, said that the six vehicle application bore a very wide normal user. Five of the vehicles were in possession, operating undei C hiring margins, and the remaining vehicle was on short-term B licence.

Part of the case, Mr. Balne said, concerned two vehicles which were to be used on traffic which was it present assembled in a factory in Scotland. The factory, belonging to the Educational Supply Association, was to be moved to West Bromwich, and Alexandra would take over this traffic, part of which arose in London and part in West Bromwich, and the whole would be delivered to Scotland. The Minister of Labour had tow stepped in, endeavouring to prevent the transfer and, for this reason, the applicant wished to modify the appliCation, seeking fourextra vehicles instead

of six. r Mr. F. G. Alexander,of the applicant company, cross-examined by Mr: M. H. Jackson -Lipkin for the independent objectors (Guest Scottish Carriers, Tartan ArieW, Guest ,Carriers Hackney Ltd., Winner Transport, Deans Transport, D. and H. Transport, and Express Road SerVices), denied that the application was really an atterript to convert vehicles from C to A licences, plus an additional vehicle. The application was made necessary 'because sub-contractors could not Provide suitable vehicles with suitable equipment to suit his customers.

The application was continued yesterday.
