Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ON Tuesday the Chancellor of the Exchequer added Is. a gallon to the fuel tax, making it 3s. 6d. a gallon, and the oil companies put up their wholesale and retail prices, except in respect of certain bulk-supply contracts.

The wholesale price of petrol rose by 31d. a gallon and of oil fuel by 3d. Additional to these was an increase of 1 id. a gallon in retailers' margins, so that the pump price of petrol advanced by Is. 5d. and of oil fuel by Is. 4id.

In the inner zone, the retail price of non-premium-grade petrol is now 5s. 6id. a gallon and of oil fuel 5s. 10d. Super-grade petrol costs bs. 4d. and premium grade bs. Oid.

The Chancellor said that, because they used oil fuel, which had to be conserved, public service vehicles could not be exempted from the increase in tax. When fuel supplies returned to normal, the previous tax would be restored.

TALK WITH MINISTER IT is understood that representatives I of the British Transport Commission, the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association, the Municipal Passenger Transport Association and the Public Transport Association met the Minister of Transport on Wednesday afterron to discuss the effects of fuel cost.

On Tuesday evening the Road Haulage Association asked the Chancellor to arrange for petrol used in commercial vehicles to be coloured and exempt from the extra tax, and to exempt all oil fuel. , They said that hauliers' fuel costs would be raised by £15m. a year, increasing their costs by 5 per cent. Rates would have to be raised at once.
