Council accuses truckers of ignoring bridge weight limits

TRUCKS HAVE BEEN ignoring weight restrictions and damaging weak bridges, according to Suffolk County Council (SCC).

The council cites data from its trading standards department, which shows that more than 80 lorries above the three-tonne weight limit have been spotted crossing a weak bridge in Kentford, which is near Newmarket.

A council spokesman says he believes that the problem has been exacerbated by drivers choosing to follow sat-nay directions and ignoring the road signs.

Not only are these truck drivers breaking the law, but they are also causing damage to the bridge, and there is a risk that it may collapse, claims councillor Guy McGregor, SCC portfolio holder for roads and transport.
