m The Driver Training Directive will establish a new Certificate of Professional Competence for drivers, which will define the skills required and establish an agreed programme of refresher training.
It will cover the operational side of using a commercial vehicle for a living and will be similar to a technical certificate. Subjects studied will include drivers hours, transmission systems, fuel economy and assessing hazardous conditions. The aim isle improve standards and raise professionalism within the industry. Retraining will take place every five years for all drivers.
The Driving Standards Agency is new awaiting pubAcation of the final document and it Is expected that training will start hi 2009.
